If you’re stuck on what golf balls you should buy your golf-mad mate, don’t worry! In this blog, we will take the guesswork out of gift giving and go over our best golf balls to buy as a gift.
Let’s get started!
In the mood for golf, but can’t make it to your local course? No worries – just plonk yourself down on the sofa and watch some film stars pretending to play golf for your entertainment. There are plenty of inspirational sports films and golf-centric comedy classics waiting for you on your streaming service of choice.
So grab some popcorn and get ready to ignore the plot in favour of critiquing the lead actor’s tee-off stance – here are some iconic golf movies that you can watch next time you’re missing the green:
It’s nearly impossible to talk about golf movies without talking about Happy Gilmore. This 1996 hit follows a hockey player as he tries to find success on the golf course. Have you ever wanted to watch a grown man yell at a plastic clown for a solid 30 seconds? It’s funnier than you might expect.
Happy Gilmore is indisputably iconic, but it’s the Marmite of golf movies. While it’s certainly not the worst film in the world, it’s very…Adam Sandler. Still, it has a handful of surprisingly heartfelt moments and plenty of good laughs if you’re in the right mood for it. Just keep in mind that it’s more about comedy than golf, so the rules of the game are often ignored for the sake of silliness.
This 1980s classic comedy is a fond favourite for many golfers, stuffed full of nostalgia. With Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and a handful of other big names, you can’t say that this movie is lacking in talent.
The whole story takes place at the ‘Bushwood Country Club’ which is actually the Grande Oaks Golf Club, an 18-hole links course in Florida. There are so many subplots that it’s almost hard to summarise, but if you like watching idiotic rich people and destructive gophers then you’ll probably have fun with it.
Caddyshack is definitely from the 80s though, and it shows. Not everything holds up well in 2026 and it’s certainly not family friendly. Maybe watch this one on your own.
Another movie that’s completely star-studded! It’s surprising that there are so few good golf movies when clearly celebrities are down for a few rounds. The Legend of Bagger Vance features Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron, as well as several gorgeous South Carolina golf courses.
The plot takes place during the Great Depression, where Bagger Vance guides a struggling golfer to help him find his swing. This is the only movie on our list that isn’t a comedy. The slow, serious drama doesn’t really match our banter vibes, but it’s an undeniable example of an iconic golf movie. It’s got some good golf and nice views, so who can complain?
High School Musical 2 takes place at ‘Lava Springs Country Club’ – which is actually the Entrada resort in Utah. This resort features a frankly stunning 18-hole championship golf course where some of the film’s most iconic scenes take place. The plot obviously isn’t focused on golf but it is influenced by the setting, so it’s easy enough to ignore the cast and focus on the rolling green in the background. It also has some surprisingly decent banter.
The best bit? You’ll get to see Zac Efron live the dream of running around a totally empty golf course. Just tune out the singing and imagine how good it feels to never queue for the next hole.
If it’s time to watch a movie with the family but you’d rather be playing golf, then High School Musical 2 is a decent compromise.
This movie has some of the best reviews of any film on this list, though it isn’t as well-known as some of the others. It doesn’t have Adam Sandler or Bill Murray, but it does star Mark Rylance as Maurice Flitcroft. In this movie, Maurice achieves the worst score recorded by a ‘professional’ golfer at The Open Championship.
This heartwarming comedy from 2021 is a must-watch for golf fans. It has the classic ‘inspirational’ plot that many sports movies swear by, but with enough originality to make it work. This is probably because it’s based on a true story; Maurice really did score 121 in the qualifying competition for The Open in 1976. He played so badly that he was banned by the R&A.
Next time you’ve got a losing streak going on the course, remember that it could always be worse. At least you aren’t banned for life.
So, what do movies and golf have in common? If you haven’t figured it out yet, we’ll give you a slow play warning. It’s banter.

Golf isn’t exactly the most boisterous sport, but there have definitely been a few colourful characters who have blessed the links with their cheeky and outrageous comments!
Read on for a rundown of the 10 most outrageous things pro golfers have said over the years.
Here, Lee Travino famously joked about the difficulty of hitting a 1-iron. It later became ironic when Travino himself was struck by lightning in 1975!
This was how cheeky former pro golfer David Feherty described Jim Furyk's unique swing in 2013.
This one is certainly an outrageous comment coming from the former world number one Brooks Koepka who also once described golf as “boring”.
This quote from retired American golfer Raymond Floyd pretty much sums up just how maddening the game can be!
This humorous jab at inexperienced golfers is credited to the legendary golfer Sam Snead and criticises the poor grip that many amateurs have on their golf clubs.
US Open Champion of 1958, Tommy Bolt was known for his short temper and club-throwing tantrums that directly led to the PGA introducing a rule fining players for club throwing in 1957, often referred to as the ‘Tommy Bolt Rule’.
Although not said by a professional golfer, we just had to include this quote poking at fun at the stereotypical golfing attire and how golf’s image has changed over time!
This is another self-depreciating golf joke from the legendary Lee Trevino that exaggerates just how hopeless his swing has become.
This quote from the Masters co-founder Bobby Jones highlights how golf is just as much a mental game as it is a physical one.
This darkly funny quote really captures the love-hate relationship many golfers have with the game.

These are just festive enough without crossing the line – the perfect funny Secret Santa gift.
This one is a stark reminder of the harsh truth of Secret Santa. You aren’t just supplying a gift – you’ll have to take someone else’s Christmas crap home with you. Subtly remind your mates that you’d rather be playing golf in peace than adding to your junk drawer with this succinct golf ball. Then smile, say thank you, and try not to be too smug about the fact that you gave the best gift this year.
Are you ready to get into the Christmas spirit? Is your friend a cunt? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then this is the funny Secret Santa gift for you. Show that you are fully embracing the festive season with a very merry golf ball that’s just twisted enough to get a guffaw out of the group.
This hilarious golf ball is for that one mate who has been listening to Mariah Carey since October. We all appreciate that Christmas is exciting, but it does grate on the nerves a bit when they just never shut up. This silly and ever-so-subtle reminder is just what your mate needs for Secret Santa this year.
A cleverly-worded insult is fun, but no match for the classics. Sometimes you just need to say it like it is. This is one of the less-festive options on the list so that your mate can use their gift all year round (and let’s be honest, we all know someone who deserves a gift like this!).

Buying Christmas presents is pretty easy when you’re shopping for someone who lives and breathes golf. Just get them a dozen golf balls, printed with something heartwarming / funny / personally abusive (delete as appropriate). Simple right?
But let’s be real here. Do golf enthusiasts actually like receiving novelty golf balls as gifts?
Novelty golf balls are a great way to add a bit of extra fun to a casual round of golf with family and friends. If you’re looking for a light-hearted gift idea for someone who is just starting out or who doesn’t take the sport too seriously, joke golf balls – particularly if they are personalised – can make a unique and memorable gift.
Serious golfers, on the other hand, may not appreciate a novelty ball quite as much. Notwithstanding the funny photo or heartfelt message, you’re probably giving your golfer pal a set of generic, unbranded balls that don’t perform anywhere near as well as what they’re used to. They might raise a smile, but they’re unlikely to make it onto the tee.
Serious golfers prefer to use high-quality, name-brand balls that will actually improve their game. So that pretty much rules out novelty golf balls you were planning to give them this year.
Or does it?
Here at banterballs, we can print your funny novelty designs on a range of premium quality balls from the likes of Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway and Srixon. If you’ve decided to buy your golf-mad mate a set of personalised golf bags, we can help to ensure they actually see a bit of play. With our custom-printed premium balls, even the most serious golfer can’t complain about quality!
We stock a range of pre-made custom golf ball designs, ranging from balls with funny golf jokes to downright rude banter – we really do have something for everyone! We even have a range of Christmas banter balls that make perfect Secret Santa presents and stocking fillers for naughty golfers!
